Basic Animation in Flash 8 for Beginners
Now that you know a lot of necessary information about animations in Flash 8, this blog post will focus on an essential topic: The Timeline and the Layers. This post will also focus on another great feature of Flash 8, the Onion Skin Feature. You will also get to know about the Masking Layer feature.
Let's Get Started
The Timeline
The Timeline basically, helps you to organize the contents of a Flash movie. It contains layers for holding the materials on the Stage. The Timeline shows frames as a series of rectangles in each layer. Every fifth Frame has a light grey fill and the frame number. Frames with black dots (•) are keyframes. The red rectangle in the header with a black frame and red vertical line below it indicates the Playhead. That is the Frame currently on the Stage. The frame rate shows the number of frames per second ( fps ) your animation will play.
The steps to insert a frame in a Flash 8 movie:
1. Select Insert in the menu (top of the page).
2. Choose Timeline in the drop-down list.
3. Click on Frame in the drop-down list.

Understanding Layers
Layers are like, transparent sheets stacked one on top of the other. The order of layers can be rearranged to change the order of objects in the movie on the Stage, that is, it can be decided which object(s) appear first (in the top layer) and which object(s) appear later (in a lower layer). You can draw, edit, and animate objects in one layer without affecting the objects on another layer.
Each new movie contains a single layer by default, but you can add as many layers as you want. The Timeline displays layers as rows. It provides options to insert, lock or hide/unhide a layer.
To select a layer, click on the layer name.
